Brake noise, wheel dust and pads that wear out early are the three complaints most likely to come back from a workshop or an end customer. In most cases the cause is found on a short list, and the fastest route to it is a systematic check rather than a guess. This checklist covers what to look at, in the order that usually finds the answer.
Start With When the Noise Happens
Noise only while braking points to the pad and disc interface: a glazed friction surface, a disc that has developed runout, or missing anti-noise hardware. Noise that continues without braking points elsewhere: a dragging caliper, a seized slide pin, or a pad held loosely in the bracket. Sorting the complaint into these two groups before anything else roughly halves the search.
The Usual Causes of Squeal
Missing or Worn Hardware
Shims, retaining clips and the grease layer on the backing plate all exist to control vibration. A set installed without them, or reusing hardware that has already lost its grip, is a common source of noise that has nothing to do with the friction material itself.
Surface Glazing and Disc Condition
A shiny, glassy pad surface usually means the pad never bedded in properly, or the caliper has been holding it lightly against the disc. Check the disc face as well: scoring, a lip at the edge, or blue heat discolouration all change how the pad sits and wears.
Bedding-In
New pads need a bedding-in period of moderate braking from medium speed, without prolonged hard stops, so the surfaces mate. Complaints made during the first hundred kilometres often disappear once bedding is done, so ask when the noise started before treating it as a defect.
Reading Dust on the Wheels
Some dust is the normal by-product of friction work, and the amount rises with vehicle weight, city driving and aggressive braking. A change worth investigating is a sudden difference from previous batches on the same application: darker, stickier deposits, or dust appearing after a far shorter interval than before. That pattern points to a change in the friction compound or in how the pads are being used, and it is the comparison a supplier needs to hear about.
Early Wear: Check the Whole Corner
Pads rarely wear out early on their own. A caliper that drags keeps the pad in constant contact and cooks it; a disc with runout knocks the pad back on every revolution; a pad that does not match the application sits unevenly in the bracket and wears on an angle. Before blaming the pad, confirm the caliper releases freely, the slide pins move, the disc is within its wear limit, and the pad shape genuinely matches the vehicle.
What to Record Before You Complain
A complaint that arrives with evidence gets solved; one that arrives as an opinion does not. Photograph the worn pads next to a new set from the same box, photograph the disc face, note the mileage at installation and at removal, and keep the box with its part number and batch details. Add how the vehicle is used: city or highway, load, terrain. With those facts, a supplier can trace the batch and answer with evidence rather than reassurance.
